Turmeric Heals Peptic Ulcer

 

CLINICAL TRIAL ON EFFECT OF THE LONG TURMERIC  (CURCUMA LONGA LINN) ON HEALING OF PEPTIC ULCER

 

Turmeric or Curcumin, also called €˜Haldi€™ (Curcuma longa) has been known as a very powerful plant with medicinal uses dating back to nearly 4000 years. Over the years, it has been enjoying a major role in ancient medical sciences as well as a food flavoring and coloring agent, in addition to being a spice.

A study was conducted to examine patients who had symptoms indicating peptic ulcers.

In this study 25 (18 males, and 7 females) out of the total of 45 patients were endoscoped, their ulcers located in the duodenal bulb and gastric (angulus).  
The ulcer sizes varied between 0.5 to 1.5 cm in diameter.

Treatment Offered 

Capsules filled with turmeric were given orally in the dose of 2 capsules (300 mg each) five times daily.

  1  Half an hour to one hour before breakfast

  2  Half an hour to one hour before lunch

   At 16.00 hours, and

  Half an hour to one hour before dinner

  5  At bedtime continuously. 

Results

At 4 Weeks

Ulcers were absent in 48% or 12 cases.

At 8 weeks

Eighteen cases had an absence of ulcer after treatment.

At 12 weeks

Nineteen cases i.e. 76% did not have ulcers after treatment.


The rest, 20 cases were not found to have ulcers and some were not endoscoped. They received turmeric capsules for 4 weeks of treatment.

Blood chemistry and hematology of all 45 patients had no significant changes in the hematological system, liver, and renal functions both before and after treatment.
